Our history

Our story began in March 1885, when a meeting was held at the Ship Hotel in Swanage to establish a Conservative Association for the district. Shortly afterwards, the decision was made to create a Conservative Working Men's Club, providing members with a place to meet, socialise and play an active role in community life. 

The Club's first home was a room in the Town Hall before relocating to the nearby Drill Hall in 1886 as membership continued to grow. During these early years, the Club became an important social hub, with reading rooms, newspapers, concerts, dinners and sporting activities forming a central part of club life. 

As membership grew, the Club expanded its activities to include billiards, rowing, cricket, whist drives and regular social gatherings, firmly establishing itself at the heart of the local community.

By 1910, it had become clear that larger premises were needed. With the support of the Earl of Eldon, plans were made for a purpose-built clubhouse capable of accommodating up to 300 members. The building was completed in 1911, and members officially took possession on 5 October 1911. More than a century later, it remains the Club's home today. 

Throughout the twentieth century, the Club continued to evolve while remaining an important part of Swanage's social life. Activities over the years have included billiards, snooker, darts, rowing, cricket, concerts, dances, quiz nights and many other community events. In the early 1970s, members purchased the building, securing its future as an independently owned club. 

Today, the Club remains proudly affiliated with the Association of Conservative Clubs, recognising and respecting its heritage. However, like many long-established clubs, it has evolved to reflect the changing needs of the local community.

Trading as The Swanbrook Bar & Restaurant, named after the Swanbrook stream that runs beneath the town, we continue to value our members, who remain at the heart of the Club and enjoy the many benefits of membership. At the same time, we have opened our doors to the wider community, welcoming non-members, visitors and tourists who wish to enjoy our facilities.

The introduction of The Swanbrook name reflects this new chapter in our history. While honouring our proud heritage and traditions, it also represents our commitment to being a welcoming venue where everyone can feel comfortable, regardless of their background or political views.

As we look to the future, we remain committed to preserving the character and history of this remarkable building while ensuring it continues to serve the people of Swanage and its visitors for generations to come.
